I. The minutes of the Undergraduate Council were considered in three separate motions: a. Course changes, additions, and deletions - Approved (Hopkins/Wells) b. Student petition - Approved (Wells/Chitwood) c. Proposal to change the Academic Probation Policy - Approved as proposed (Wells/O'Haver) Prior to approval of the academic probation policy there was considerable discussion and two subsidiary motions considered. Both subsidiary motions failed to pass. Subsidiary Motion 1: Motion to Postpone the motion to later time (Sullivan-Gonzalez/Moss) Failed Subsidiary Motion 2: Motion to change the proposal to add a change to the suspension threshold to a 2.0 also (DSG/Hopkins) Failed Discussion included the number of students affected, the concerns students have, and the importance of academic standards. II. Plus/Minus Grading Scale Implementation Plan Approved as proposed in the implementation plan (Eftink/Sullivan-Gonzalez) In addition to considerable discussion, there were four subsidiary motions, three of which failed and one that was withdrawn by incidental motion. Subsidiary Motion 1: Motion to postpone (Moss/Hopkins) Failed Subsidiary Motion 2: Motion to add a D+ & D - to the grading scale (Gispen/Wilder) Failed Subsidiary Motion 3: Motion to add an A+ to the grading scale (Gispen/Jackson) Withdrawn by incidental motion (Gispen) and consent Subsidiary Motion 4: Motion to Call the Question (Previous Question) (Pate/Hopkins) requires a 2/3 majority Failed Discussion included the history of the +/- grading scale, student concerns, the grading scale, the timeline for implementation, and the implications of implementing the scale as planned. III. A demonstration of Ole Miss Today, which replaces Email to Groups, was given by Dr. Kathy Gates No motions were made on this agenda item.
