Additional Minutes Notes
Regarding the following item: 638023864 Graduate Student Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Requirement Discussion here is a summary of the discussion: There is much value in encouraging the university's graduate students to be knowledgeable about concerns of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI). Some other universities require competency to be demonstrated for all or some portion of the graduate student body. This is done, for example at U. Virginia, by requiring schools/college to have their own discipline-specific requirements. This could be valuable to prepare the students for the job market, in which knowledge of JEDI issues is important. In the discussion it was mentioned that many if not all graduate programs on campus already include some aspects of JEDI training. Some accrediting bodies require it. The Graduate School has offered some professional development sessions on certain topics of JEDI training. It was decided that the topic could be worth reconsidering in the future after systematic data is gathered from the various units on campus of what they currently require or make available as optional to their graduate students. This could be obtained as a request from GPCs. A second plan to consider that was suggested at the meeting is to request the UM Office of Diversity & Community Engagement (ODCE) to make 90-minute JEDI training, that is currently delivered to people planning to be on hiring committees, available to some or all graduate students. Depending on how many students participated, this could be a considerable amount of work for the ODCE. This was only an idea considered and no action is planned regarding it.
